5 Parenting Tips Only A Millennial Mom Would Give

Parenting has never been a one size fits all thing no matter what generation you were born and raised in but I’m beginning to notice some patterns with millennial moms that weren’t so common with generations before us.

Self-care is essential.

I’ll give it to them. Gen X (and before) parents and grandparents were devoted! Not saying we aren’t devoted as parents but I feel like the stress on taking care of yourself to be the best parent you can be is so much greater than before. I seriously have learned (and am still learning) that you have to live for yourself in order to be the best for your family. I’m not talking about going to the club every weekend and leaving your kids home alone. But even small things like stepping away and taking a break for a few minutes has helped me to keep it together throughout the day. Do what makes you happy because a happy parent raises happy children.

A mess is a learning experience.

And for real, its not that serious. My grandmother spends a considerable amount of time trying to get RJ to play with only one toy at a time. I have no idea why. And I’m almost positive thats how we played too. I can’t lie when RJ first became REALLY interested in his toys I hated watching him dump them out everywhere. It literally made me cringe. But I honestly sit and watch his imagination thrive in the midst of his toy piles. Learning through play is real! & it only takes a few minutes to clean up at night.

Their feelings matter, just as much as their manners.

I feel like I grew up in a generation of forced politeness. Doing what was asked of me wasn’t an option no matter how it made me feel. I try to always remind RJ that his feelings are NORMAL (even in the midst of his meltdowns) but he still has to behave a certain way. And even when he’s being his horrible toddler self and shading me by not saying thank you for the snack he asked for 100 times, I know he listens. It’s evident when he’s in contact with other adults and they tell me how well-mannered he is (usually after they comment on his endless energy LOL).

Kids are curious. Asking questions isn’t rude.

I grew up where “because I said so” was the parenting cop out for an acceptable answer. Kids have questions. Chances are if your 3 year old is asking “why”…… they genuinely want to know why. Kids are people just like everyone else and just like you, they want explanations. “Why?” is just a question. I’ve yet to meet anyone with severe mental health issues from getting their questions answered.

Every indiscretion doesn’t require punishment.

Especially at such a young age. Kids are constantly pushing the boundaries and seeing just how far they can cross the line. I make it a point to make sure I explain bad choices ONCE. Because hey, maybe he really didn’t know! I hate when I tell someone about something less than stellar RJ did and their first question is “did you pop him????” like wth… no I explained to him why what he was doing was wrong. Imagine that….

What are some things you learned about parenting that you didn’t learn from the generation before you? Leave your thoughts in the comments!

The Emergency Plan – Same Sex Couple in Doc McStuffins Episode Causes “Controversy”

Over the weekend an episode of Doc McStuffins entitled “The Emergency Plan” aired featuring a doll family that consisted of two moms and two children. In the episode, the doll couple (voiced by Wanda Sykes and Portia de Rossi) is separated by an Earthquake cause by one of the other toys in McStuffinsville because they do not have an emergency plan and concludes with them creating one after being reunited by Doc and her team.

While many praised the episode for its inclusion and diversity we know, theres always one. Organization ‘One Million Moms‘ has their panties in a bunch over ‘The Emergency Plan’ accusing McStuffins creator Chris Nee (who is an out lesbian) of pushing “an agenda” and veering away from family friendly content. They even go so far as to urge other “conservative families” to write to Disney urging them not to air the episode with the ultimatum being Disney not being allowed in their homes for “fear” of seeing commercials, reruns or previews of the episode. Dramatic much?

I can’t speak for anyone at Disney but I’m sure they’re paying One Million Moms no mind. Check out “The Emergency Plan” on Disney Junior or watch online here. As always, leave your thoughts in the comments below!

Motherhood.. & How I Learned to Keep My Foot Out of My Mouth

**I wrote this post back in February of 2016 sometime and just found it in my drafts yesterday. I don’t know why I never published it cause it was (and still is) a relevant lesson. So I’m sharing it today… RJ is almost 3 now lol**

RJs 15 months old! He’s such a big boy. Everyday he learns something new and it’s truly truly amazing to watch him discover the world. Being a mommy is so amazing and I wouldn’t trade it for all the freedom in the world.

That being said, my boyfriend kindly reminded me that… RJ is 15 months old. He was all “Hey babe, remember when u judged XYZ cause she said she breastfed for 18 months…… RJ isn’t that far from it”. {insert my blank face here}. My baby is still breastfed & I have no shame in my game. People tell me all the time “it’s time to stop” and I ignore them because I’m amazing at not giving a crap what other people think about what I do with MY son. But truthfully, I’m ready for it to be over. And my boyfriend was nice enough to remind me of the golden rule of parenting: never say never!

You can read a gazillion and one parenting books and nothing will prep you for the real thing. I thought I was gonna breastfeed for a year and then magically my baby would be over it and we’d move on eating all kinds of regular food and live life. Sike! {takes foot out of mouth} I gave that girl my BEST side eye for saying she breastfed “that long” and here I am with no willpower in making the kid stop. There’s no end in sight! Swore up down and around my child would NEVER embarrass me in public & at 15 months old I’ve already left him tantruming in the middle of the floor at Target (aka our second home) because what the heck does he know that young? Besides the fact that he wants a reaction? Nothing!

Since becoming a mom I try to be very very careful what I say about people’s parenting choices or their children’s behavior because truth is…. you never know! And if your boyfriend/husband/partner is like mine he’ll remind you of that time….. & you’ll be eating your words later LOL.

What are some things you said you’d NEVER do before you became a parent that you find yourself doing now?

Embracing the Change! Life So Far As a Mom of Two

I’m back! Zayn made his (very fast) appearance on June 20th and I’ve just been spending time adjusting to being a mom to two and getting back into the swing of things at home. It hasn’t been as hard as I initially thought it was going to be because SOOOOOO many articles make you dread going from one child to two, but it’s definitely been an adjustment and we’re all learning together.

RJ LOVES being a big brother. He hasn’t asked us to take the baby back or shown an extreme signs of jealousy or resentment which honestly I was a little worried about. My big boy is definitely a mamas boy and initially I was really worried about how he’d feel about sharing his parents with another person 24/7. He always wants to hold his brother and if Zayn makes the tiniest peep he’s there at his side before any of us. He doesn’t hesitate to show people his baby and remind everyone “you see my brother?”. I think we did a gairly good job prepping him to become a big brother before Zayn arrived.

Speaking of making a peep, as a breastfeeding mama I highly believe in the paci! Zayn isn’t as bad as RJ was (yet!) but these kids would literally stay attached to me all day if it wasn’t for pacifiers and the Wubbanub is 1000% my favorite (check out my rave about it here from when RJ was a baby)! RJ chose this design for his brother because lions are his favorite animal but the Wubbanub comes in a variety of fun designs, all made with a single mold, medical grade silicone pacifier. They’re sold at a variety of places but I recommend checking out Wubbanub.com to find your local retailer (most likely Babies R Us or Target) and find out anything else you may need to know about the product.

I’ve learned so much about myself in such a short time frame and I honestly look at both my boys almost everyday in shock and awe that I get to be their mommy! I’m so grateful for grace (from my boys, my love, and myself), patience, and the love I’ve gotten from them and their daddy and I can’t wait for us to continue to grow together as a family. This journey through motherhood is exhausting! There’s a lot of sleepless nights, more diapers than I can count and I’ve been cleaning a lot of booboos so far this summer (boys are rough!) but I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world! I love being their mommy and I’ve embraced the transition from one amazing little boy to two!

Follow us on Instagram and Twitter to keep up with our family and all we’re doing this summer!

How was it transitioning with another baby in your family? Have you tried and/or gifted the Wubbanub?

*Disclaimer – This post is not sponsored but I did receive the Wubbanub for free in exchange for my honest review. I would never recommend a product I didn’t love and/or think you guys would love. If you missed it, check out my review for the Wubbanub and my first child here. Waaaaay before I received anything for free! ;-)*

Doc Mcstuffins Special Episode to Air on National Cancer Survivors Day

 image via Disney Junior

On Sunday June 4th Doc, Audrey and Hannah (Audrey’s doll) will all be coming to Disney Junior at 8am EDT to tackle a special subject on an episode of Doc McStuffins. Audrey is a 4 year old little girl going through chemotherapy whose doll comes to the Doc for a problem that causes her to lose her hair also. This episode is even more special in the fact that GMA news anchor Robin Roberts (a cancer survivor) plays the voice of Audrey’s mom.

While cancer may seem like too deep of a topic for preschoolers, Leukemia is the most common cancer in children and teens and Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia usually peaks between ages 2 and 4. Children’s hospitals across the country are going to hold special advance screenings of the episode for patients. Love it Disney!

“Hannah the Brave” airs on Sunday June 4th at 8am EST on Disney Channel. Will you be tuning in?
